London Day 1
Howdy, after touching down in England I went straight to Cambridge and spent the night at Westfield House.
After waiting a few days for my rucksack to appear I decided to proceed on to London without it. When I arrived on the bus I walked down to the Parliament building and took some neat pictures from across the Thames.
After walking around for a little while, I went to check in to my hostel. I jumped on the Tube at Westminster and traveled up to Camden Town,
which is kind of a hip urban area of town.
After that, I went back to Parliament and went on the tour but was disappointed that they won’t let you take pictures on the inside.
I suppose it is to encourage the sales of postcards. One of the neatest things was the place on the door of the House of Commons where the Doorman knocks every year to summon the House of Commons to join the House of Lords. See, the Queen opens parliament every year and gives a speech. When she does however the House of Commons closes its doors to exercise its independence from the House of Lords. The doorman then has to use this big can with a heavy metal top to knock on the door to summon them. They open the door and join the House of Lords.
There were also statues of Churchill and the Labor party Chief that stand near the House of Commons Door. The Churchill statue has almost no
foot left because people rub it for good luck before a speech in the House of Commons. In fact tourists are no longer allowed to rub it due to deterioration.
After the tour, I took some pictures of Westminster Abbey and then went back to the Hostel and rested a bit. After that I went and got some
fish & chips for my first real taste of English cuisine.
